The Reciprocity Ladder — How to Test If Someone Can Handle Depth

You don't need to decide upfront how much to trust someone.

You can test it. Gradually, without them knowing they're being tested, and without any risk of the kind of one-sided exposure that makes introverts close back up.

This is what the reciprocity ladder is for.

The Basic Idea

Every relationship has a depth level it's currently operating at.

The ladder is a way of moving that level up deliberately, step by step, using small offers of depth to find out if the other person is capable of receiving more.

Each rung on the ladder is a slightly more real version of yourself offered to the other person. A slightly more honest opinion. A slightly more personal piece of information. A slightly more genuine response to a question.

You go up one rung. Then you watch.

What You're Watching For

Two things.

First, does the other person acknowledge what you offered? Not necessarily with a big response. Just with some sign that they received the real thing, not just the surface version of it.

Second, do they offer something back at a similar level? Reciprocity is the signal. If you go slightly real and they go slightly real back, the relationship has the capacity for more.

If you go slightly real and they stay at surface level, or deflect, or make it weird, you have useful information. This person, at this moment, is not capable of receiving more depth.

That's not a judgment. Some people don't have it. Some people need more time. Some relationships develop depth slowly. The ladder tells you where you are.

An Example

You've been chatting with someone at a few events. It's been pleasant but surface level.

At the next event you say something slightly real. Not deep. Just not the weather. An actual opinion about something. Something you actually think.

They respond with their own actual opinion. Match the register.

Next time, you go one rung higher. You share something slightly personal. Not a secret. Just something real.

They respond in kind.

Now you know. This person can receive depth. The relationship has the capacity. You can extend further with actual confidence rather than hope.

What Makes This Different From Just Opening Up

The difference is calibration.

Random opening up relies on courage and hope. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. The outcome is partly luck and partly the other person's capacity.

The ladder is systematic. You're not going fast based on a feeling. You're going at the rate the relationship can actually hold.

The Full Framework

The reciprocity ladder is one of the frameworks inside Social Code. The full mechanics, how to build it, what to watch for at each rung, and what to do when someone doesn't match, are in the free bundle at joinsocialcode.com/frameworks.
